I have always been fascinated by chemistry and the structure of molecules, particularly those that underpin the function of biology and as such, I completed a PhD in Inorganic chemistry in 2005, concerned with the design and reaction mechanisms of synthetic metallonucleases. I then applied my molecular and biochemical knowledge at the University of Newcastle, Australia to advance our understanding of the causes and consequences of sperm DNA damage. My current research involves sperm cell biology with a specific focus on how reactive oxygen species negatively impact the male germ cell, including the processes which lead to protein and DNA damage and its consequence for reproductive health. Knowledge of this cell type delivers its use as a convenient system towards investigating the impacts of potential environmental stresses, such as radio and microwaves that provide communications between our now ubiquitous mobile devices.
